Modern Poetry before the 7.2 earthquake in Taiwan

The air is filled with the unknown smell of diesel

Every breath was sharp and defensive.

Like finding a seat in a rolling balloon

Feeling a little stuffy, chest tightness, crisis of consciousness

The unknown thing that fights back is scary

What kind of mental power is forced but counterproductive?

Heart and lung failure, dreams shattered

Year after year, month after month, day after day, I feel the power of God

Should we surrender, accept, and let go of hypocrisy?

Accept the name of the call from the upper world

Everything is just a dream of Qinglong breaking through...

What is “olfactory hallucination” ?

relating to the sense of smell that dose NOT exist…

On the night of March 13, 2024, I suddenly felt difficulty breathing. I kept doing deep yoga abdominal breathing until I fell asleep a little. Until five o’clock in the morning that I woke up with chest tightness and couldn’t sleep anymore.

When I woke up in the morning of March 14, I thought I was having an asthma attack because I couldn’t breathe. I used asthma medication in an attempt to get first aid, but it didn’t seem to make much of an improvement. I also began to feel a strong burning smell, and thought it was an olfactory problem caused by the epidemic virus infection. However, using the rapid screening test, it was normal, and I could smell other smells normally. I felt that my heart and lungs were about to fail, so I wrote a modern poem on the writer’s blog, hoping to divert my attention. After that, I searched for medical information on the Internet and came across the so-called rare olfactory hallucination. Some symptoms show that human brain wave neurons release abnormal responses, which is considered a type of brain epilepsy.

During the day, I went out to the business street to do some errands. I wore a mask, but I still smelled a strong smell of dioxin. Sometimes it smells like sparks from burning wires, and sometimes it returns to the clear smell of burning steel in a building being built, with images of the broken steel bars exposed after a collapsed house. It was as uncomfortable as standing at the engine exhaust behind a car and not being able to breathe oxygen at all.

Suddenly, I felt a point of green light calling me, and I followed the path back to the studio to look for it. I found a pot of mini cactus ready to bloom in a small corner of a flower shop. I bought it for NT$50 and took it home. It seemed to distract me from my phantom smell. However, I looked up the name of the cactus, and it turned out to be: “Zhe Mo“, a homophonic metaphor translated and sounded like Torture.

For a week, I was plagued by olfactory hallucination that made me feel like I was going to suffocate to death if I didn’t do something else to break my concentration. I went to the neurology outpatient clinic of a hospital. The specialist said that he had never heard of any clinical experience with this kind of olfactory syndrome and suggested that I be referred to an otolaryngology specialist to check for problems with the olfactory nerve. I actually went to see an ear, nose and throat specialist. The doctor said that I had stones in my tonsils. He suspected that it was sinusitis and prescribed antibiotics. Not only was my medication ineffective, it also caused uncomfortable stomach pain and bloating. It happened that on March 20, I had to accompany my mother to the hematology department of the hospital. I took the opportunity to ask the doctor for his opinion, and the doctor also gave very enthusiastic guidance:

I have heard of olfactory hallucinations, but have no medical clinical experience. Medical research once pointed out that dogs’ sense of smell is a thousand times stronger than that of humans. So is your phantosmia an innate ability? Is it an animal instinct? Do you have any signs of being too smart? I don’t think there is a cure for that.

After listening to the doctor’s opinion, I felt frightened…Have I had another abnormal breakthrough in my brainwaves recently? So, I went home and took a seven-chakra test. I also looked at the palm print on my hand, and there were three five-pointed stars of different sizes in the palm of my hand. The mysterious cross pattern appears on both hands. I’m afraid of predicting the future because I can’t do anything about it.

On March 30, the symptoms of phantosmia began to diminish, and by March 31, I could no longer smell the smell of burning steel, the smell of grinding rocks and no more feeling can’t breathe in the dust-fog . However, in the next three days, my physical body was in a state of fear and thought of fleeing Taiwan. On the evening of April 2, my computer screen was illuminated with an illustration of the King of Tibet. After turning it on three times, the King of Tibet became extremely enlarged and seemed to float closer to me. In the past, the early warning experience has been fulfilled, and the registered mail will be delivered to my door the next morning. This makes me even more nervous. Because, the 7.2-magnitude earthquake on the morning of April 3rd has confirmed it !

I also felt that the physical crisis was lifted after the big earthquake, then my tense body relaxed. I fell into a coma for next two hours, and it seemed that I was recovering my physical strength. Only when I sense a major earthquake with a magnitude of 6 or above will my body have signs of abnormal reactions, and it will heal without medication. I have endured this kind of physiological reaction in Asia for 30 years. The respiratory and thoracic surgeon helped me measure my lung capacity. The doctor said that the humidity and heat in Taiwan, and even the influence of air pollution, had caused major changes in my body.

I felt tired and hard to breathe oxygen. I plan to return to Canada where I am a member of a business immigrant family in 1990…and the northern of forest wildfire shall be calm down now…Hopefully the nature of the earth will calm down, too…
